"Posts of articles from papers have been posted on SI
threads for years without this type of action."

Yup, posting the complete articles has been quite common
on SI & other message boards for years.

It does make one wonder where this came from doesn't it?

I see my thread is being redacted as I type.

Maybe a lurking communist blew you in!

But seriously, instead of getting all paranoid over who the fink is...why not just make it a rule to always observe the law and respect copyrights? The cut and paste crowd may have had the upper hand for awhile, but content creators are increasingly on the prowl. It is pretty easy to write programs that sniff out violations of copyrights. And it will probably get worse over time: rights holders feel that they must protect themselves or else be prepared to lost those rights. For trademark holders, it is essential to self regulate.

As you suggest, it is better to post a link and a paraphrase or commentary instead of rote copying. We should all acknowledge copyrights when using excerpts such as, "In a copyrighted story, the SF Chronicle really boinks so and so when they say <paraphrase and short excerpts>". Frankly, as I lurk here, there and else where in SI, I sometimes find it difficult to sort the original opinion in posts from that which the poster copied from another source...even when the poster intended no confusion. I often end up going to the original anyway to understand who wrote what.

In the long run, self expression and analysis always gets you more credit from teacher than simple repetition. You might even want to add a short style guide to the header.
