That's the "standard" contract which I prefer to negotiate down or sideways. Less money up front, four to five payments instead of three, with a substantial payment upon completion.

The only exception was the kitchen remodeling contract, because I knew the contractor needed to invest in the big-ticket cabinets upfront and needed the money to buy them. The cabinets were delivered to my house and stood in the living room for a while before the work began. I'd paid for the cabinets but actually had them in my possession, so I was comfortable that no one was skating with my money before the work began. I agreed to pay for the whole job in four installments, instead of three.
