FWIW, it's "GAAP", not "GAP". What would cause this problem to be unique to Dell, if indeed it is true that IBM and HP are selling Prescott systems? Dell motherboards/power supplies not up to the task?

Charges against accumulated depreciation usually are first recorded in the month that an asset is put into service. In Intel's case they could probably record 90nm costs as capitalized exploration cost, since it seems to be a hit or miss thing.
