The logic of the modern left: If one had said, "I oppose Prime Minister Churchill GENERALLY, but I support his continued conduct of the war against Nazi Germany.", one would have been saying very little indeed.

The stance of the contemporary Democrat party is that they oppose President Bush GENERALLY. But they have not yet had to present the REALITY of John Kerry to the public. That cannot be avoided anymore. They have thus said very little-and THAT is about to change.
