Oh, the history of Christianity is real enough. It is the core stories that buttress their centuries of refined dogma which I question--along with many others. Much of the Christian Movement can be traced through history.

The writing of Paul precedes the rest of the bible by at least 15 years. The dogma to justify Christianity was not written until at least 70 AD with Mark. And then more writings continued (far more than were "acceptable" to those who later created the "official" Christian dogma with all ITS subsequent "corrections").

The following is an excellent time-line (colour-coded, even <g>). It is important to recognize that the Christianity preached by Paul (after the purported crucifixion of Jesus)is based on spiritual ideas which must have been part of the original Christian Movement. It is not based on a miracle Jesus. It is rather based on Paul's knowledge of a spiritual movement together with a vision experience he claims to have had.

So we have a Jewish society enslaved to a Roman world which consists of power untempered by anything but fear. We have the Senate and the Emperors continuously at odds. We have mothers and sons assassinating one another to bring another to power. We have marriages being arranged, dissolved, and arranged again: Poison, knives, and booby trapped boats. Bribery, death, destruction, and sexuality without any limits. A world of fear and loathing; a world without earthly hope--even for the powerful.

Then we have a slave people looking to the heavens for an answer to earthly despair. We have sects and movements. We have many like the Baptist eating locusts which is Kosher. We have gnostics who wish to move beyond the ugly animal sacrifice and whom look back to the pagan roots of Judaism--the pagan roots of all religions. Most importantly we have a sect called the Nazarean Essenes. And so Judaism transforms a part of itself and reverts to a more pagan foundation with another resurrection myth which is older than persephone.

And the following is worth reading many times for the manner in which it brings Paul into the context of Judaism

Most important, if Christianity is to be understood at all, is the critical fact that the Jesus written of 70-100AD was NOT the Jesus that Paul was talking about. Paul was talking about a new Judaism. Christianity was just a sect of Judaism that got tired of waiting and waiting and waiting while the world around them literally went all to Hell. And these gnostic people succeeded in sloughing off the ugly in Judaism (much of it, at least) and keeping the good...and giving it a mythological structure that sold the Roman Empire and much of the world. Christianity is just Judaism for everyone and with a kinder face than the original.
