So far the people I've tracked were in the South in the mid 1800's. My wife has some folks that were on the Union side. There is a real sense of accomplishment when you fill in a piece of the puzzle when putting your tree together. My kids are much more interested in this than I expected.

Have you sent to the National Archives to see if you can find a copy of his papers? There are forms on the NA site....Be sure if you do to mark on them "Please send ALL information from the files"... It might be a bit expensive if there is lots of material, but I've found that it's better you actually know what is in the file, rather than to ask specifically for a single piece of info.
