I've actually decided that the banks are usually the *last* things to short. They are a sort of "peak detector", holding rock solid until things look like there might be a general disaster, and then they collapse in catch-up mode. So, be short the other stuff first, and when that stuff has fallen a good bit and it looks like there might be *systemic* trouble ahead, that's when you short banks.
