Motorola chips in India and China Anuradha Krishnamurthy EmailPrint March 10, 2004 Motorola Inc, the cell phone maker has closed down the semiconductor chip design units in Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan and shifted base to India and China. As India and China offer a more lucrative opportunity to design and manufacture chips used in mobile phones. This decision is said to be triggered by the fact that wages for engineers are lower in India and China as compared to the other places. A typical Singapore factory worker earns around 7.14 USD an hour, compared with 53 cents in China, according a report last year by the Economic Review Committee. Drawn by such low costs, MNCs have been eyeing India and China to nourish a massive outsourcing industry. Motorola shares fell 2.3 percent to 17.66 USD in New York Stock Exchange on March 8. The shares had risen 62 percent last year. Sales in the wireless phone units have been dipping recently, hit by delays in the delivery of new products offering popular features such as integrated digital cameras and color screens, as per the company. The jobs transfer is apparently a setback to Singapore's efforts to promote electronics development and design. Motorola, which has been in Singapore for 30 years, employs 2,500 people involved in high-end manufacturing, research, development and software design. techtree.com
