As you note, the current phones are very early. Qualcomm's MSM6150 and MSM6550 chipsets (sampling mid '04) will support 4 megapixels. Combined with 1xEV-DO for speedy uploads (and eventually WCDMA), they will be a popular (and inexpensive) feature IMHO.

I expect quality will improve to some extent. However, the usefulness of a camera phone depends on the extent to which it 'replaces' a camera - and I don't think these things are anywhere near that level yet. Ultimately, can you imagine how many controls would need to be on the phone to give users control?? What about the need for flash?

If I have to carry my camera *anyway*, why the hell do I want to pay extra to have a camera on my phone that I never use?

It's the digital camera technology that is disruptive. Putting a watered-down version on a cell phone is not. IMO it's marginally more useful than "m-commerce."

Besides, the two technologies advance independently of each other, and the last thing I want to do is to pay for lagging advances in (cell phone) digital photography every time I upgrade my cell phone.

I can't see camera phones replacing digital cameras for 5-10 years at the earliest, and more likely they will not fully replace them. If the technology becomes dirt cheap to include on a phone, it'll probably be there as a feature, but I don't think they'll get that much use.

Frankly, I think the swelling and future privacy backlash against camera phones will dwarf their added value to a cell phone user.

All IMO ;)
