it seems to me impossible to believe that the Basque separatists could have done this - it's simply not their style ( i.e. large scale attacks on civilian targets ) . they prefer to target politicians actually, and their attacks on 'soft targets' have traditionally been relatively small scale.
however, it is well known that jihadists are well established in Spain - after all, Morocco is only a stone's throw away, and Spain has quite an abundance of madrassas and mosques. it even used to be ruled by the 'moors' once.
therefore, the conclusion that an islamist faction is responsible is probably not too far-fetched, especially as Aznar is seen by them as a mortal enemy.
