You are far smarter than our Clever Cheryl to know where this is going to lead to.

In some form or other this issue has been debated for decades already -- in this age of global commerce how to figure out where a product is made, as in "made in ..." label.

Now we are extending these concerns to taxability of income. I am sure a tax consultant would love it -- it's about jobs, isn't it! But that's not a productive dollar.

A whole lot of businesses have engineered their business practices to include global collaboration. Take IBM for example. Or HP.
Now, as the tax regime changes - in CA - these same corporations are going to be forced to reengineer their business practices again. As often, these companies also rope in CA units as part of delivering a service or a product to other locations. But now they will try to isolate jobs that are to be delivered in CA. This may hurt not only Infosys' but also NY, CO and wherever else. May be these states will do a similar move. Islands! We'll have islands, and project managers will think about tax laws as much as about centers of excellency. Probably lead to lower productivity.

For short term this will also lead to more jobs. Just as in the old conundrum -- if a window is replaced, that adds to GDP. Therefore, should everyone go ahead and replace their windows to pull up the GDP?

Maybe some like it. Maybe some don't care enough about it. I think it sucks.

Dinesh
