My daughter is feeling bad for people we bomb, for her lesbian friend with kids who wants to get married, for Rosie O'Donnell and now Martha Stewart.

People personalize these issues - I recently read a column in a woman's magazine basically asking for readers' take on single motherhood. They printed lots of letters from women saying, "My <sister, best friend, best friend's sister> raised her <kids, son, daughter> alone and the kids are <bright, respectful, terrific, going to Harvard>. So that makes it OK - who needs a dad? The factual and statistical reality for kids raised by a single parent (usually Mom) doesn't make a dent. Also, they never seem to ask the kids about the impact of single parenthood either.

I have a friend who is as equally "sensitive" as your daughter. She is married now, but raised her two kids all alone. She has said that it is the issues: the middle east, the economy, separation of church and state, outsourcing, the environment and global warming, dependency on foreign oil, personal and equal rights/freedoms, abortion, gay marriage, special interests, etc. that concerns her and she's convinced that GWB stands on the wrong side of all of those issues, and that he *is* everything Kerry said he is.

She told me the last time we talked....and I quote......"i wish everyday to be rid of GWB and his 'ministry'.....the 'war on terror' is something that doesn't exist." I've heard some people don't believe the war on terror exists but "his ministry".....that is a new catch phrase. Be looking for it.....she hangs out with the hollywood crowd. Funny, I should send her the White House link whitehouse.gov It features three notices regarding Women's rights. My friend is a huge "Women's Rights" advocate.

The people of Madrid are just like us and they deserve our complete support. I've been trying to find an address so that I can send my condolences, but I'm not having much luck. Will call the local consulate next.

Yeah, right! The war on terror doesn't exist. Tell that to the people of Madrid.
