this is playing out exactly like the Bush I election. Companies are starting to feel major heat on this offshoring crisis. They are going to have to scale back their plans and since this is the key issue with the economy it means that we will recover.... in about 6 mos. Too late for Bush.

Is what's happening in Afghanistan all that we think it is?

bangladesherdak.net

You know, it dawns on me that the near-immediate focus on Iraq following Afghanistan caused a lot of publicity about the conditions in Afghanistan to disappear. Most Americans probably think the Afghanistan campaign was a complete military success.

The truth of the matter is at least three things have happened:

1) The president of Afghanistan is actually the mayor of Kabul, as there's barely any power and influence beyond the stretches of Kabul.

2) The former warlords, historically renown for opium production and smuggling, now control most of the country, each with their own respective feifdom variation. This past year's opium crop was the largest ever!

Hey, anyone happen to know any democratic warlords, besides Bush--lol?

3) The Taliban, although out of concentrated power, still wields influence and is consolidating more and more each day--its alliances with Pakistanis still intact. One can almost argue the Taliban succeeded in defying the US, given that OBL is still on the lamb.
