Aren't you supposed to be getting ready for something?

I may not have been in Nam but I've read dozens of true autobiographies about guys who did go there, and though they are all types, one thing they all shared was the growing madness and horror. In particular, the stories about the CIA Phoenix Program which used SEALS as assassins is chilling stuff. Nick-named The Green Ghosts they snuck into villages and took out targets using knives. Like Jk reported, they took ears, heads, disemboweled, were in the terror business. That was all CIA strategy to play into the Vietnamese psyche. Bob Kerrey may have done some of that being the SEAL that he was.

By 1968 the place had gone plain bonkers. Part of that was because the whole war was escalated based on a lie and we really had no business fighting any huge war over there. It was also a huge strategic mistake with no clear mission and way-way over-built. Halliburton and Bectel were huge players then too. They had a keen interest in keeping the war going as did many manufacturers.

Iraq is similar though smaller (for now) and not as bad. But like Vietnam, Iraq was also based on a lie.

Our military has cleaned up its act vis a vis atrocities since then. Now only errant missiles and bombs occasionally wipe out women and children. They're getting smarter too.
