I don't think we are getting smarter by "nature." The brain remains the same. We are getting better at finding and training the best ones.

We're also getting smarter by nurture, if not by nature. Because we are growing up unstunted by periodic famine. Good plentiful food makes a difference to cognitive development.

There are still significant marginal benefits for people who think and act "smart". Though society is doing its best to mitigate that benefit.
