China to shut down polluting industries

BEIJING, March 12 (UPI) -- China has warned it will shut down factories that are polluting the environment.

Speaking at a seminar on pollution, Vice Premier Zeng Peiyan Friday said the government would shut down polluters threatening the safety of drinking-water source areas and punish noise polluters disturbing residents' ordinary life.

He said 2004 would see government taking action against polluting businesses.

Zeng said despite the achievements made in national environmental protection, problems of river and lake pollution, acid rain, noise pollution, electronic waste, dangerous waste and toxic chemicals remained dominant in China.

He said business venues causing smoke pollution would also be targeted, Xinhua reported.
