China end-Feb money supply up 19.4 pct yr/yr
Reuters, 03.12.04, 1:12 AM ET

BEIJING, March 12 (Reuters) - China's broad M2 money supply was up 19.4 percent at the end of February from the same period a year earlier, the central People's Bank of China said on Friday.

The narrower M1 money supply was up 19.8 percent, the bank said on its Web site at www.pbc.gov.cn. Cash in circulation, or M0, was up 10.9 percent.

The central bank has worried that rapid monetary growth could worsen overinvestment in sectors like property and increase inflationary pressures. The bank has tried to trim lending through steps such as raising the bank reserve requirement last year.

China's M2 was up 18.1 percent at the end of January from the same period a year earlier. M1 was up 15.7 percent while M0 was up 4.9 percent at the end of that month.

China's M2 includes M1, personal savings, institutional time deposits and other deposits. M1 includes M0 and institutional demand deposits.
