I usually take 4 or 5 hits to put in a 16 penny. I've seen people do it in 2 or 3, but I rarely bend nails or hit my thumb.

Also, I've noticed that framing hammers seem to have a bit better balance. What do you think?

Framing hammer is a big plus when doing 16 to 20 pound nails. Little heavier and requires fewer whacks.
