" Why the Hell do you think I'm "optimistic"? I don't believe that the Owlyers/FBI/CIA are a "solution". I just told you multiple times that according to the mathematicians, "almost all" problems are intractable. What they teach in calculus class are the small handful of problems that can be worked out. Of course there is no "solution" to terrorism any more than there is a "solution" to hunger, illiteracy or drug use. These are unsolvable problems. Re: "Owlyers and politicians are in the business of giving people what they think people want. It matters little whether their name is Lincoln, Busch or Kerry. A politician can tell people that the CIA and FBI will protect them, but if such politician fails to make good on that promise, there will always be another politician who will come along and promise something more. " If the problem is "giving people what they think people want", then you're already dated on the terrorism gig. What the people want, according to the latest poll, is a better economy. I'm not saying that the government CAN give the people a better economy, clearly that is not the case, but instead pointing out that already the focus of the people is shifted away from terrorism. It is interesting that Al Qaeda chose to attack Spain rather than the US. My guess is that our police are more effective than theirs. Re: "If AQ is able to pull off one or two additional performances in the U.S. of the type they just gave in Spain, you will not find any CIA or FBI Officers willing or able to guarantee the then sitting President that they can prevent such actions. And that will not be acceptable to that President because it won't be acceptable to his constituents. " Already the CIA and FBI are not "willing or able to guarantee" that they can stop terrorism. Don't you even read what the President's men constantly say? That is the way it has been and it is the way it will always be. That the President won't find it "acceptable" is of no more importance than the fact that the President doesn't find it "acceptable" that Iraq sucks, the economy sucks, and he is behind Kerry in the polls. -- Carl
