Spain's masses march in grief, anger

SANDRO CONTENTA

Millions of Spaniards across a grieving country jammed the streets yesterday to echo their pain and solidarity as police detained several people in the hunt for bombers who killed nearly 200 people on commuter trains.

Shouting "assassins" and waving banners proclaiming peace, some 2 million people — almost half of Madrid's residents — braved the pouring rain in a demonstration the likes of which this capital has never seen.

In their mourning, and their resolve not to be cowed by violence, they were emotionally linked to marches every bit as staggering in other Spanish towns and cities.

Some reports said 11 million people across the country marched — a figure that represents a quarter of the country's population.
