Good post, Nightowl:

There is no perfect solution, we have to work within our capabilities, deal with other Nations authorities whenever possible to implement solutions.

And change plans as certain events occur, such as responding to more resistance than expected from Saddams supports in Iraq. To bypass the UN when Chirac said he would veto any new resolution.

The 311 attack in Spain is a turning point. Some have questioned the need for military force in the war on terror, thinking the US was exaggerating or overdoing the matter.
Hoping that perhaps 911 was a one-time event..

They now recognize that GWB was correct is one regard- that
a war exists, its them or us, and that some action had to be taken. There was an immediate positive response of the stock market to 311. And GWB will gain in the polls.

Our governments options after 911 were limited, it takes time (years) to implement internal security measures, to convince the public to authorize money for the job and train and equip people. The only immediate effective and funded tool was the military.

The years and expense would have been wasted if Saddam had been left free to pursue his nuclear missile program and it is now estimated he could have obtained a nuclear capability in only three years.

( there has been plenty of debate about the need for that, but time moved along, its now water under the bridge. Saddam is disarmed )

Spain may now have a major economic problem, if people refuse to ride the trains, or vacation there.

I wonder if the US Press will follow that , or stay with more important matters such as the election and corporate greed.

Hi NightOwl,

Thank you for your clarifying elaboration.

I expect we'd become the Mother of All Police States in very short order if America ever got half way to the level of insecurity Israel lives under.

Yes, that's what I would expect, too. I experienced a hint of it in Germany in 1977 during the hijacking of Mr. Schleyer and a Lufthansa jet.

All of a sudden there were police road blocks all over the country. A new kind of dragnet investigation was invented ("Rasterfahndung"). Any remaining members of communist parties in public service were dismissed.

A funny quote from
globalsecurity.org :
Germany ... has enacted several major laws supporting the investigation and prosecution of terrorist organizations and, for the first time in some years, is beginning to take control of its problems. It has taken a leadership role in the fight against terrorism.

Back to your post:

I suspect that the Iraq invasion was, in part, intended to make a point as much as was the WTC attack.

Yes, as Thomas Friedman wrote in "Because we could" #reply-19000067 and George Friedman in a Stratfor analysis, "Looking Beyond Iraq" #reply-19719415
