It will be interesting if the polls evolve over time to support your guess. For now, they show that Bush is not connecting with hardly anyone outside his loyal base. It will be much harder to take the bedrock 40% and stretch it to 51% somehow than to cater to the independent swing voter who wants some real answers about jobs and security instead of the sloganeering we have had so far.

I heard a great quote the other day - presidential challengers don't win elections, incumbents lose them. Bush Sr. lost because he didn't have a connection to the voters any longer. Junior is headed the same way with many people he needs to win over.
