... [what] makes a firewall next to worthless."

thecow,

The computer learning board of tc on iHub gave insight
into this with a few extra angles, most important mentioned
was the issue being asked about this Saturday, that being
of having a firewall installed and to make sure the installation
was done correctly, and most important, its does a good job
of protecting both your pc from being harmed, and preventing
your pc from being used by hacker to harm another pc.

A post here did mention a web site to check out your pc,
so I'll just duplicate that message with a Copy & Paste
from the iHub CL board to add a few extra words.

Google Search: "Windows XP firewall freeware"
ok,
This is getting "too much" to do quickly, so I'll just report what
came up in the first searching and ask a simply question of:
Does anyone do this?
"After you install a firewall... check it to make sure
that it is configured correctly...."
firewallguide.com
After you install a firewall, be sure to check it with a service
like the Security Space Desktop Audit to make sure that
it is configured correctly. Testing your firewall is the only
sure way to tell that your computer is really being protected.
See our installation page for more information....
