April 1 deadline firm for fingerprints
By Jill Dunn

The April 1 deadline will stand for states to begin fingerprint-based background checks of truckers who haul hazardous waste materials, a Transportation Security Administration representative said March 11.

“We’re moving forward with the April 1 deadline,” said TSA spokeswoman Andrea Fuentes. The deadline was extended last fall after states protested they were not ready to implement a system for fingerprinting.

States that cannot meet the current deadline must apply for an extension from the TSA before April 1. States granted an extension have until Dec. 1 to comply.

Fuentes said she could not say how many states applied for extensions or how many have said they will meet the deadline because states have three weeks remaining before the deadline. “We’re still receiving information from each state,” she said.

The cost of fingerprinting truckers is still being researched, she added.

The 2003 Patriot Act requires that the fingerprints of hazardous waste drivers be added to the Federal Bureau of Investigation national data bank. Truckers must comply to receive or renew a CDL with a hazmat endorsement.

Looks like I had better hurry up to get my Hazmat renewed...

Hi Steve, I don't really know.

It's probably related to funding.
