"We beleive the moon is made of green cheese" vs. "We know the moon is made of green cheese"

Two wrong premises don't make a right one, RF. No western country with an Intel service had any doubt that Saddam had WMD. How much and what kind was an issue, not the existence itself.

It is perfectly fair to get all over Bush for the fact that the CIA was wrong. But calling the admin statements a "lie" is not true.

So it is your opinion that there is no difference between the following statements:

"We believe the moon is made of green cheese"

vs.

"We know the moon is made of green cheese"

I don't see how that distinction is relevant. Either of those could be a lie or the truth depending on whether the speaker believed that is what he believed or knew. That the moon is, in fact, not made of green cheese is not relevant for determining a lie. That would be called, instead, an error.

The only way the WMD thing gets to be a lie is if Bush and company deliberately mislead the public. If they accepted bad information too readily then you would have malfeasance or incompetence or some such. Otherwise they were simply mistaken.

So, one vote in favor of more weasel words from politicians. Kerry is definitely your guy.
