The audience is either bored from repetition or bored because they can't understand extremely esoteric, albeit perhaps well-meaning regulations and commentary. The net result is that those who defend the environment, often volunteers, get worn down and give up.

Yes, all very true. I'm one of those who has often felt that way too. Fortunately, I'm part of a like-minded and rather tenacious community of environmentalists.

That's why we need leadership from the top down so I have to respectfully disagree with you on that point. We have our candidates both saying that they are "for the environment" and, I suspect, both would follow pretty much the same path.

Most definitely true. But what you also need is a leader who surround himself/herself with people who are willing to be responsive to the electorate and not just to corporate lobbyists. From what I've seen, Bush has certainly surrounded himself with the most pathetic herd of loser doggies that any cowboy ever lassoed. I don't know enough about Kerry to be able to guess whether he will be any better at attracting the right group of people to help manage the country. Difficult to say. That becomes problematic for the electorate. Up here, our province just ousted a government that had gutted several of our most important environmental protection policies. The result was the Walkerton incident (contamination of a watershed by farm waste, resulting in infection of a community well system with e-coli). Our Environmental Commissioner held a year-long enquiry into the cause of the disaster. The cause was traced back to scrapping of watershed protection. The government that did it is now out on its ass by a landslide. The new government has just put into place new and more powerful watershed protection policies that go far beyond anything we've ever had. Unfortunately, I don't know if you've got anything like our ECO. I expect maybe the EPA used to be the same, but now it seems to have been gutted with the appointment of a total loser. Anyhow, as I said, this all comes back to politicians who are responsive to the electorate. Sadly, the U.S. may not actually have someone like that this time around. Rather a pity. I feel sorry for the land and the people.
