OT:

///Put a space between characters. < space i space >///

Hmmmm. I've never seen that before. People usually say

<*i*> -- remove the asterisks.

////But, E, first I have to find a post of yours through Search, which doesn't work./////

No, all you have to do is look at the E in the post of mine you're reading, or responding to, and click on that.

When you've done that, you're at my profile page.
(Or at anybody's on whose user name you've clicked.)

Toward the upper right hand corner of the profile page, you see this:

Ignore this Person | PeopleMark this Profile | Send Private Message

If you never want to read a post by that person again, click Ignore them.

If you want to put them on your own page of profiles of people to track, click PeopleMark this Profile.

If you want to PM them, click Send Private Message.

///Très drôle.////

YOU JUST GOT HERE AND YOU CAN DO ACCENTS GRAVES AND CIRCONFLEXES? How? It's frightening.

////How come there are so few forums here, and they're so duplicative? President George Bush. Impeach Bush. Impeach Kerry. Kerry For President. Bush For President. Bush Lies. Bush Lies A Lot. Kerry Lies. How's a person supposed to know where to post? /////

First, because anyone can start a subject, on a whim or in a fit of pique. I could start one right now called "Potholders, trivits, Fascists, and Travel Bargains."

Second, there are tons of subjects. Look at the top left under "SILICON INVESTOR." There's a row that says

Hot Lists SubjectMarks PeopleMarks Inbox (801) My Profile Options PeopleSearch Start a Subject

Above that row, there's a row that says

Home / Message Boards / Research / Editorial

If you click on Message Boards, you get a list of categories. The one called Coffee Shop is the one you're interested in now.

If you click on Coffee Shop, you get a very long list of subjects titles. Here's the list of just coffee shop titles. Soon enough you'll know which ones are likely to be dealing with subjects of interest to you. Here's the current list of Coffee Shop subjects.

siliconinvestor.com

If you can do accents, you can PeopleMark posters and Bookmark threads. Get the NYT out of your little head.

And I thought that I was a technophobe.

bluered,

Re: How's a person supposed to know where to post?

Excellent question. The best way I know of is to follow the "hot list" to see which threads are lively, locate other members who seem to have some quality things to say, and rely on old hands to come up with lists of better than average threads. Here's some of what I keep up with, sort of, here on SI. I've selected these items because they'll have some variety and because you'll find intelligent and knowledgeable posters on them. And a signal-to-noise ratio that is tolerable.

Big Dog's Boom Boom Room --Member Bookmarks: 679
Subject 50987

Booms, Busts, and Recoveries --Member Bookmarks: 1000
Subject 37210

Dutch Central Bank Sale Announcement Imminent? -- Member Bookmarks: 177
Subject 21259

Mish's Global Economic Trend Analysis -- Member Bookmarks: 233
Subject 54696

The Environmentalist Thread -- Member Bookmarks: 58
Subject 23540

If you're inclined, PM me and I can provide the names of some of the folks at SI that I regard as worthy of peoplemarking and paying attention to. :)

Good luck with your orientation.

All the best, Ray
