They won that round. There are currently about 1,600 Spanish troops stationed in Iraq.

The total number of dead and injured from 3/11?

Around 1,600.

[Edit: turns out the actual dead and injured count is 1700, compared to 1603 Spanish soldiers in Iraq. Those 1603 soldiers obviously meant nothing to the Iraq war effort, so I think the lesson here is that, unless you are going to go in strong, don't go in at all.]

Rather good timing on the part of the terrorists. If the bombing had occurred one day prior to elections, maybe people would angry enough to vote for the Popular Party. But three days gave enough time for the Left media to do its work. If a week prior, maybe there'd have been time for voters to come to their senses.

I think we can be sure that they -- terrorists and Leftist "news" media -- will follow-up on this momentum. A nasty combination.

I expect a sell off in Spain stock market and Spainish firms.

Germany calling for meeting on security , wonder if they are getting more concerned with 20% Muslim population. They are trying to crack down on head dress to schools. It would appear they could be up on the target list.

Yes and you can be sure that the lesson learned by the terrorists will cost more innocent lives. Clearly there are many in Europe who can be bought and intimidated. The victims of the next Islamo fascist attack to influence elections can thank the Spaniards.

Who knows it may be us here in the USA.

The terrorists are laughing their asses off.

If terrorists can control elections with attacks...They have won.

If a country accepts terrorism without a fight, they have lost.

The Socialists winning is the worst possible news. They will pull the Spanish troops out of Iraq, and reverse their policy with us.

Realistically, I don't think that Spain's support is decisive, but this does show that any remaining supporters of America will fall like dominos at the slightest well timed push.

The fundamental problem not to lose sight of is that we are on the Saudi oil teat, with our and the world's economy dependent on the continuing supply of oil. Whether populations in this or that country live under a barbaric dictatorship has been and will continue to be besides the point. Short term stability and business as usual is all that ever counts. This more than any other factor is why so many countries are diplomatically opposed to the US overthrowing Saddam. The public may be on the bandwagon of anti-American hatred fueled by the invidious rhetoric of demagogues, but the "State Departments", they know where their interests lie - la stabilité par dessus tout.

Frankly, if Islamist extremists triumphed in expelling the West and we were not dependent on all that oil, who would care ?

Am I possibly wrong about this ?
