Optimism For Bush Economy Fades Again On Weak Job Growth, IBD's March Poll Finds
Wed Mar 10,10:08 AM ET

By Brian Mitchell

Americans' faith in the economy slipped again in March after yet another month of disappointing job growth.

The IBD/TIPP Economic Optimism Index fell 2 points to 54.5 in March. It was a second month of decline. The index lost 4.1 points in February after hitting January's 22-month high of 60.6. Over 50 means optimism; under 50 means pessimism.

"With a nearly jobless recovery and the latest economic numbers tempering last quarter's optimism, a drop in the index is understandable," said Raghavan Mayur, president of TIPP, a unit of TechnoMetrica Market Intelligence, IBD's polling partner.

"It may be that the brakes have already been applied and we may be seeing some stabilization soon," Mayur said. "The decline is across the board, but not quite as universal as it was last month."

The index was lower than its present level only twice in the past year. Its worst level under President Bush (news - web sites) was 48.8 in March 2003, on the eve of war.

The IBD/TIPP Economic Optimism Index has a good track record of foreshadowing the confidence indicators put out later each month by the University of Michigan and The Conference Board (news - web sites).

The index is based on a national poll of 958 adults from March 1-7. The margin of error is 3.3 percentage points.
