To Americans, Spain is just as distant as Iraq. I doubt there is much of any change in opinion in America, because of the Spain attacks.

Another attack on the U.S. homeland would be a different matter. You're right, that could easily result in the same kind of jingoism, everyone screaming for revenge, just like after 9/11. We haven't gotten any saner since then; still operating on EyeForAnEye principles (or 5 Eyes for each of ours....or 10).

But our enemies don't seem to have the capability of launching attacks in America any more, I'm guessing, since I think they would have, if they could. Besides, they have so many easier targets in Iraq and Afghanistan, there is no need to travel to New Jersey to kill Americans.

Kerry is not running as a pacifist. Quite the opposite. With his background, he can pretend to be everything to everyone. Reminds me of Nixon in 1972, claiming to have a "secret plan" for success in Vietnam. I want all our troops out of Iraq, and I'm not sure whether Bush or Kerry will do that faster. It really depends, not on who wins the election, but on the cost in lives to America, and public support for the war.
