Makes me curious whether a majority of ME countries would be in favor of the US staying, or of leaving, when Iraq is up and running by itself and our military presence is reduced.

Sig,

Now that's an idea with some zip. Would this "majority" want the US to really go away? ...Or does this majority just want the U.S. to hang around and do what it's told?

I'm putting my money on the latter. But that's just a guess based on the near over night disappearance of the USSR. But what would happen if the US was just disappeared Monday morning?

Lock stock, people, corporations, out sourced jobs, weapons, Wall Street and real estate; all of it simply vanished over night; and replaced by a much bigger Bermuda Triangle.

What the heck would get sucked into that power vacuum? Shoot, that would be more fun than finding out what happened to the Neanderthals!

I'm almost tempted to convert to Reversionary Masochistic Isolationism just to find out what devilment would pass for ME relations then... almost. <vbg>

...My "optimistic" guess is the UN, NATO, the other *TOs, etc, would all collapse. There'd be a new round of defense treaties/orgs implemented. Then, the assassination of the Chinese Premiere and his wife while in Bali during an unprecedented world tour would set off WWIII.<Hoo><sigh><Hoo>
