Thanks cow and shadowman. My friend got rid of it this way. Wanted to post it here to let you know problem solved!

Hey I figured out how to rid myself of the beast all by myself! Now I remember why they used to pay me to be the systems administrator after all! Sometimes I think the brain atrophies unless it has to work out a conundrum once in a while.

I took it off the hard drive with SpyBot S&D, then I guarded against it with Zone Alarm. Then I defended against it in further downloads in Pest Patrol... then I went back and did a System Restore to before it came into my system and Voila! No more beast on my desktop.
