The example you present is basically a variation of the Heisenberg's cat problem.
space-talk.com

A cat is in a sealed box with a cyanide capsule, a geiger counter, and a radioactive sample. The decay of an atom in the sample will cause the counter to break the glass, releasing the cyanide and killing the cat.

If the box is opened at any time, will the cat be alive or dead? Or in an in-between state?

"Hidden variables" were at one point postulated to re-introduce determinism back into the universe. This attempt was later demolished.

However, at this time I will take no bets either way.
