In the US there was overwhelming support for president bush when we attacked in afghanistan. If gore was the president, i think he would have done the same thing. How do you think the spanish left will play this beyond the iraq pull out? Will they toughen the stance against terrorism or try to negotiate with al quada? Can you tell us a bit more about the philosophy and history of the spanish left. mike

The significance of the bombings in Madrid, and the election results that followed, is probably a lot more profound than anyone would care to admit.

For one thing, I don't think it matters whether it was Al Qaeda or not. The immediate view taken by Al Qaeda and the like, will be that a country's internal matters CAN be influenced by terror.

This knowledge will no doubt embolden the terrorists to do more. There is nothing like success to breed more attempts.

So the world civilization as a whole has to come to a decision that it has asked itself many many times since terror has been in existence. Do we let terror run our lives? This question certainly has a lot more urgency and meaning in the last few days.

Do countries behave in order to not make themselves a target, like a kid walking meekly and softly down the hall so as not to attract the attention of a school yard bully.

It will be a sad and dangerous if countries tailored their policy to appease the terrorists.

This is GUT check time for many countries, especially in Europe.
