cant help you on the fence but here are a couple posts on my board on the FOOL on Sheep

From Harmy:
(a single bale of Merino wool sold for AUD$675,000 here last week).

From Mish:
How many sheep does it take to produce a bail of wool?

From Harmy:
You know Mish, I honestly don't know - probably around fifty to a hundred. The reason that one was priced so highly was that the quality was out of this world. There are some sheep breeders who have culled their flocks to produce super-fine wool which fetch these very high prices. You wouldn't get much change out of $3k for a suit at these prices.

Harmy

From Mish:
Harmy, I want to mention a woman I met in Door County Wisconsin. She raises sheep. I am going to guess 100 or so. Has a Bed and Breakfast on a tiny farm. These sheep are extremely well cared for. They all wear coats to protect the wool. The small areas that are exposed to the weather are all soiled and ratted and matted, but on the protected areas (looks like a sheep is wearing a thin blanket), the wool is in extremely good condition.

Going a step further, she lets buyers come by and pick out individual sheep to buy wool from. It's kinda nice to be able to tell someone that this coat was made from wool from "Bettie" or whoever, knowing that "Bettie" was well taken care of. I know she gets very top dollar for her wool.

On the side she teaches spinning classes and sells art from local artisans and woolen goods in a small studio. Nice little concept HUH?
