All these ancient grievances would stay dormant, if not for the tangible conflict in the present.

Yes, there are non-Muslim nations who opposed the Iraq occupation, like Russia. But Russia has her own occupation going, in Chechnya. Same story in India.

The Spaniards themselves don't seem at all confused, about why they got bombed. And their new government has a practical plan, to avoid future bombings:
1. Defend the Homeland
2. Avoid pissing off the Neighbors
