I don't think it's possible for us as Americans to really grasp suicide bombers, regardless of whether we are on the left or on the right or in the middle, or nowhere in particular on that scale. Fighting to the death in order to save what you love, your family, your home, your freedom -- many, if not most of us, can grasp that. But committing suicide is a mortal sin. Our God does not want us to die for Him. One of the things that made 9/11 so incomprehensible is that, up until then, hijackers had always had demands. These hijackers had no demands, they were simply suicide bombers on another scale. As for leftists being willing to die for their cause -- of course there have always been extremely committed leftists, from the beginning. My impression is that ideological leftists have been more willing than conservatives to die for their cause. As Buckley put it, leftists want to "immanentize the eschaton.” They want heaven on earth, and they are willing to kill for that, and they are willing to die for that. Conservatives prefer to live for their cause, and death is not sought, nor welcomed, nor romanticized, just not flinched from when necessary. Heaven is not on earth, never will be, but God has certain standards which must be adhered to in order to get to Heaven in due course. Thus, back full circle, to the allegation that "we love life and they love death." They love life, as well, they just believe that suicide bombing is a direct ticket to heaven, and we don't.
