JF, Defending the country is a common cause, it's not quite as trivial as garbage collection or even fire fighting, as you seem to make it. It's part and parcel of being a citizen.

I don't see how the logic applies to defending the country, but not to public works like garbage collection, fire-fighting, or law enforcement. Surely those are just as vital to the survival of the state as serving in the military, no?

Maybe it's not in your makeup to risk your life for your country

Your appeal to patriotism is laughable. Just because I don't believe in calling up the draft except in times of severe crisis doesn't mean I fit your definition of a "chicken hawk," or that I'm taking the sacrifices of prior generations for granted.

But hey, if you don't believe in a draft for law enforcement, that means it's not in your makeup to risk your life in serving the public and upholding the law, right? Or if you don't believe in a draft for firefighting, that means you are taking the sacrifices of firefighters for granted, right?
