The trouble with polls is they often offer false dichotomies.

In this case, it is presented as a question of a choice between a constitutional amendment banning gay marriages, and the legality of such marriages. But the fact is such marriages are already illegal in the vast majority of the nation, the issue is governed by the states.

I think most people would agree with having the matter decided by their state government. After all, it is the state that creates the rules about marriages. If I want to know who can marry who under what conditions in Nevada, I don't look it up in the Federal Code, I look it up in the Nevada statutes.

In the states that have recognized gay marriage, the people of the states are free to amend the state constitution to prohibit them.
