I agree that farm subsidies should be discussed. On the trade issue, I'm not sure which is more amazing: 1) that Bush claims to be for free trade or 2) that the press doesn't call him on it.

This illustrates part of the problem: issues are complex and require an in depth discussion. Yet the media just wants "sound bite" politics. It is easier to say Bush is a "free trader" and Kerry is a "protectionist". Many major economist think that the reverse is true.

Conservative commentator Bruce Bartlett: “From the point of view of trade, it (Bush) is the worst administration since Herbert Hoover helped bring on the Great Depression by signing the Smoot-Hawley tariff in 1930.”
