It's politically insane and it's political fantasy land. What did they lie about? Please provide evidence that they intentionally misrepresented the facts that they had in hand in the immediate aftermath of the Madrid attack... The evidence I've heard about is that they were almost immediately able to match the "taggents" in the Madrid explosives to those which had previously been confiscated from an ETA cell. That's pretty strong "probable cause" to initially believe that the ETA was the primary suspect, despite the fact that the attack was not their usual MO. But it's not uncommon for facts to be misleading in the initial days of an investigation.. Afterall, remember when we all initially thought the OK City bombing was an act of terror, and they were searching for a middle eastern suspect?? Was that a lie too? Either way, it was not intentional.. Nor will it likely ever be found that blaming the ETA was an intentional act of deception... They can always cite the incomplete facts and initial clues that misguided their judgement.. And in fact, the ETA can not be completely ruled out as a participant in the attack. And at the very least, it still suggests that there was a connection for the source of those explosives that is shared by both the ETA and the Islamist suspects. And if it's discovered that ETA was complicit in the attacks, even if only as a supplier of explosives, Zapatero will be under tremendous pressure to forcefully deal with the faction, potentially re-igniting the civil war between Basques and Spaniards.
