Anzar said "ETA" for one day

The spelling is Aznar. He was so "sure" of it that he made the UN Council pass a resolution condemning ETA. It is inappropriate and unprofessional to come to such quick conclusions.

I have seen interviews with about 10 Spanish people. All of them blamed the ETA fingerpointing.

The Socialists said...

The Socalists said "The Iraq war is wrong" long before the attack and act now accordingly.

"Eurosoc.com" -Quote Of The Day
16 March, 2004

"If it was al-Qaeda in Spain, they changed the result of the election: One-nil to them."

- Frank Gardner, on BBC News 24 last night. Gardner is a toe-the-party-line BBC reporter: He even says things like "The so-called war on terrorism". It's safe to say that if someone like him reckons Zapatero owes his position to Islamist terror, it's a conclusion shared on the left as well as the right.

Aznar had no business blaming ETA in a knee-jerk way in the absence of facts. This was a costly error at a highly-charged time. The Socialists exploited this mistake in the same way that the Partido Popular would have exploited a similar Socialist error.

To suggest that the Spanish electorate responded directly to Socialist spin is wrong. While some voters may have, others might have responded to the perceived sleaze in immediately and without justification blaming ETA for the explosions. How much each factor--the unjustified accusation and the Socialist spin that Spain needed to get out of Iraq to avoid further bombs--was responsible for how many votes against the PP we'll never know.

The PP's loss in a dead heat election was a multi-factor event. I believe that at least one of the factors was a self-goal.
