U.S. TACKLES CHALLENGE OF MULTIPLE WARHEADS

The Middle East Newsline reports: "The United States, in an effort being monitored by Middle East allies, has begun tackling the challenge of defending American troops against enemy ballistic missiles with multiple warheads.

The Defense Department has launched a project that would develop an interceptor that could launch miniature kill vehicles to destroy missiles that contain multiple warheads. The kill vehicle would also be capable of distinguishing between real enemy missiles and decoys.

Officials said the Pentagon effort is meant to confront a trend by North Korea and Middle East allies to develop medium- and intermediate-range missiles with multiple warheads. Such countries as Iran and Syria have also been examining the prospect of developing decoy missiles to penetrate missile defense systems. Russia has also been offering missiles with multiple warheads to prospective Middle East clients.

The Missile Defense Agency has awarded Lockheed Martin Space Systems a $768 million contract for the development and demonstration of a miniature kill vehicle, or MKV, system. The company, based in Sunnyvale, Calif. and involved in the PAC-3 and THAAD projects, has been contracted to develop such a system over an eight-year period in a program managed by MDA…"
