Very interesting snippet from that article - since Bush's reelection campaign is based on the idea that the economy and our security would be in shreds without him, he will struggle to turn this around:

The right direction/wrong direction figure is a measure that pollsters view as a highly reliable early indicator of problems for an incumbent.
