I think Aznar was not running for reelection.

Democracy in Spain doesn't seem to be like democracy in the US. They had Franco for so long, maybe authoritarianism works better there, I don't really know.

As for the war in Iraq, one of the things I have been contemplating is the letter, supposedly from Zarqawi in Iraq, complaining that they were being so hampered by the coalition that "by God! This is suffocation!"

Which makes me feel so good that I can't help but suspect its veracity. But, assuming that it were true, that we've managed to somehow chain up Al Qaeda -- isn't it reasonable to expect that Al Qaeda would be striking out at the weakest links?

These are deadly people, implacable enemies, formerly fighting for a cause but now fighting for their lives. It would give them their greatest joy to strike at the strongest links, but the greatest success will come from striking the weakest links.

It seems to me that it is imperative for everybody involved in the War on Terrorism to assess their commitments. Perhaps running away and saving their skins isn't a bad idea, if they otherwise are not reliable allies.
