Japan: CDMA2000 in IMT-2000 Core Spectrum

<< Something that I believe that you have been waiting for....a 2GHz DO card for KDDI (from Hitachi). >>

Thank you, Slacker, for that link. I have, I have.

Obviously that card will be powered by Qualcomm's MSM6500 Chipset Solution which started sampling last July and represents a significant step up from the MSM5500 which powered initial 1xEV-DO handsets and modem cards.

We should as a consequence, I would think, be seeing soon, the first commercial deployments of 1xEV-DO in IMT-2000 Core Spectrum. KDDI is less spectrum constrained in existing 800/900 MHz PDC/CDMA spectrum than DoCoMo, but one would think that increased 1xRTT/1xEV-DO data usage in 800 MHz would soon dictate utilization of their IMT-2000 2GHz core spectrum. This May article discusses their plans, and states they plan to start service in 2GHz as data only (although that may have changed):

The only 1xEV-DO (CDMA1X WIN) data card currently being offered in Japan that I am aware of is the Kyocera W01K. I have been wondering if the unlimited all you can eat data plan KDDI 'au' EZ Flat plan (4,200 yen/mo = $39/mo) is available for modem cards. Do you know?

Edit: Evidently it's not since the KDDI website says (subscription to the fixed charge packet communications service "EZ Flat" is unavailable).

KDDI 'au' website here:

KDDI is launching their 2GHz card much earlier than I predicted....it looks like March 31st is the targeted date. They are also cutting the per packet fee. For $40, you can get about 80MB.
