Mish:

I am the last person who might provide an opinion on "calls" of any kind but I sure feel good adding to my gold stock long positions. (g)

Incidentally, had a weird experience on my way back from the west coast. As you know, I have a bunch of "oddball" markers that are fun to keep track of and that frequently provide some insights. Truck traffic observations is one of my "favs".

On the trek back across the country, once I was east of the Rockies, the absence of long haul trucks was simply astounding. Not weather-related as it was excellent. Whole minutes would go by with nary a truck to be seen in the oncoming lanes. A weird new experience. Of course, once back east of the Mississippi, big rig traffic reappeared but it sure wasn't what I am used to seeing. That said, the Chicago freeways remain a mad gauntlet of truck traffic. I don't envy truckers who have to contend with the convergence points in the interstate system, even as things quiet down.

The trip had other insights but more on them later. It does seem to me that while the "wealth centers" (Miami, Atlanta, etc.) continue to evidence the benefits of the booming real estate bubble, nevertheless, many other parts of the country provide mute evidence that things are not healthy. The burgeoning "for sale" signs on small retail businesses are just one of many such signals.

Best, Earlie
