JF, Cultural, geopolitical, military would be easy. Economic we are intertwined... but that doesn't mean it has to dominate political policy.

All of these factors are interdependent. How are we going to separate our economic needs from the geopolitical mess if our oil money is feeding the sheiks at the expense of the average Arab? How are going to block any cultural influences when capitalism is seen not as an economic system, but as the tool of the Great Satan? If military influence is a no-no, then why were you supportive of the first Gulf War, assuming you were?

I'm saying, what would happen if we let it go? Let the rest of the world evolve as it will, instead of covertly (or overtly) trying to impose our will?

The only way to be consistent in this philosophy is to adopt the Pat Buchanan isolationist doctrine.

Hi John, "one of five such facilities under construction from Texas to Massachusetts."

story.news.yahoo.com

Only Texas thru Massachusetts. Wonder why they don't have a research center on the West coast, where so many scientists are? Do you ever get the feeling Bush dislikes the liberal West coast?

Am really glad they are pumping money into research, just puzzled why the funds favor the East coast.

"The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (news - web sites) is spending $1.1 billion this year to upgrade state and local capability to detect and contain an attack. "

Hope the CDC finally gets the ability to ensure hospitals and ERs finally install epi software for epi detection purposes. That would be money well spent.

RE: "The Federal Emergency Management Agency (news - web sites) is spending $3.4 billion in 2004 and 2005 to stockpile vaccines around the country in case of a bioterrorism event."

They should stockpile flu vaccine and maintain several large, off limits chicken farms, because flu vaccine is made from chicken eggs. How do you make flu vaccine for humans if all the chickens die from Avian flu ? Apparently, vaccine can't be made without chickens. Maybe they can freeze chicken eggs like they can do for human eggs.

Regards,
Amy J

AMEN! Give up control.....not in this life time.

Did you see on the news that Nixon was monitoring J. Kerry like a hawk when he came back from Vietnam. And stayed up during Kerry's first run for political office until he was sure he had lost. This is the president of the US worried about a guy who was all of 24 or 25 and just starting out.

Its unbelievable. Why are these people so paranoid?

Maybe help them out with the dollars we save on military offense, also spend a few more on defense. Would we still be the evil Christian Crusaders? Where is bin Ladens political justification?

Are you kidding? And cut back on defense? Bite your tongue!

First of all, the ME problems started close to a thousand yrs, ago, when the arabs life style reached its peak, and has deteriorated ever since. The simple truth is that the arab world is destitute, can't provide jobs, or food, to feed, its millions of starving people, and is beset, with an archaic religion, which refuses to change, to meet the needs of modern realities. If the US and the world, were to develop an alternative fuel, and had the option to leave the ME alone, there would be massive starvation, and massive unrest, as there society changes into a society, which will meet their needs.

Maybe help them out with the dollars we save on military offense, also spend a few more on defense. Would we still be the evil Christian Crusaders? Where is bin Ladens political justification?

Bin Laden, and most terrorist, are a tool of the clerics, who know that westernization of the arab world, will mean that they will lose their power, as many religions in the west have lost their significance over time. The clerics, and OBL hope that by going back to the thirteenth century ideals, Islam, and the arab people will regain the prestige and power, they had then. But, it will never happen. You can't turn back the clock.
