Well we certainly don't need $1 billion gun registries. Elect the Conservatives and get this monstrosity closed down.

Holy cow, there's a lot to talk about in this one.

1.) If she'd depressed and genuinely suicidal, what does it matter if she has a gun? As long as she hasn't expressed an interest in taking someone with her, then the presence of a gun is irrelevant. Romans knew how to open their veins centuries before the invention of gunpowder.

2.) Jan Reimer says there's no proof that having a gun keeps people safe. I don't know how tight the stats are, but there's lots of stories from down south, in the states where self-defence laws are liberal, that the phenomenon of "home invasions" doesn't happen when the potential perps have to fear getting blown away.

3.) The standard line from police in Canada, including the RCMP policing rural areas, is that the ONLY appropriate thing to do is call 911. Now let's see; in urban areas you can hope for a 10 minute response time. Home invasions tend to last less than 10 minutes. In rural areas...?

Wendy C. will respond that if there's a gun in the house then the kids can get it. Fair enough; have trigger guards and such.

Montreal judges can make all the law they want. My responsibility is to keep my family safe. The police can't guarantee that a home invasion won't touch me, and they can't guarantee that they'll be able to respond before some perp permanently messes up my family. Ask Barb Danilesco's family about that.
