This isn't much but perhaps it will give you some ideas.

When the system is booting, press F8 to get the advanced options menu and select "Last Known Good". The last configuration that was used to successfully boot is used to perform the boot.

Dr., I have same problem with #2 computer. HDD not recognized, Insert Boot disk. Since I have cover off computer, I shut down, touch some bare metal on case, reach in and jiggle all the IDE connectors. Some times I find a loose one, usually not, don't know what's going on but on reboot things are OK.
Perhaps remove all cables, IDE, Floppy and Power, and reseat, maybe/maybe-not. Good Luck.
